SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

) .-

Report No.: 50-302/77-77 2.

'

Facility: Crystal River Unit #3

3. Report Date: 2 August 1977
4. Occurrence Date: 9-10 July 1977
5. Identification of Ce.urrence:

Cheuical addition pumps CAP-3A and 3B inoperable contrary to Technical Specifications 3.1.2.2.

6. Conditions Prior to occurrence:

Mode 1 power operation.

7. Description of Occurrence:

At 0810 on 9 July 1977 and 0815,10 July 1977 preparing to add boric acid to the nakeup

'

,

tank, chemical addition pumps 3A or 3B would not deliver boric acid to the tank. The -

pumps were determined to be airbound and were vented on each occurrence, restoring operability.

8. Designation of Apparent Cause:

The system was thoroughly checked and no immediate cause for the pumps being airbound was iound.

9. Analysis of Occurrence:

This event had no safety significance as the high pressure injection pumps and the

, borated water storage tank were available and operable.

10. Corrective Action:

Vent valves were installed on each pump and appear to have been effective in precluding recurrence as the event has not repeated.

11. Failure Data:

These two occasions constituted the second occurrence of this event. Previous occurrence reported as LER 77-53.
