'A SPECIAL REPORT CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 2 DIESEL GENERATOR 2B INVALID FAILURES ON JANUARY 15, 1988 DUE TO TRASH AND MOISTURE AFFECTING THE LUBE OIL PRESSURE SENSORS Three Invalid Failures of Diesel Generator (D/G) 2B occurred on January 15, 1988, while Unit 2 was in Mode 6, Refueling. There have been 3 Valid Failures within the last 100 Valid Starts of D/G 2B and one in the last 20 Valid Starts. Consequently, the current testing interval is 31 days, which is in accordance with Technical Specifications Surveillance 4.8.1.1.2. There have been 3 Valid Failures within the last 100 Valid Starts on Unit 2 D/Gs.

While troubleshooting a Valid Failure which occurred on the same day (see Special Report dated February 29, 1988), D/G 2B tripped af ter starting and operating for approximately 80 seconds. Annunciators indicating a lube oil problem were received.

The cause of the problem was found to be trash and moisture in 2 out of the 3 sensors for D/G 2B Lube Oil Pressure. The sensors were cleaned and recal-ibrated. The D/G periodic test was later satisfactorily completed.

D/G 2B had been previously removed from service af ter the Unit entered the current refueling outoge. D/G 2A was operable throughout the period in which these Invalid Failures occurred on D/G 2B. The necessary corrective mainte-nance was performed within 35 hours4.050926e-4 days <br />0.00972 hours <br />5.787037e-5 weeks <br />1.33175e-5 months <br />.
