SUBJECT:

Duke Energy Corporation Catawba Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-413 Special Report Loose Parts Monitoring System Pursuant to Selected Licensee Commitment 16.7-4 and Technical Specification 6.9.2, this special report is being submitted due to one channel of the Unit 1 Loose Parts Monitoring System being inoperable for greater than 30 days.

On' December 28, 1997, Unit 1 Loose Parts Monitoring System Channel 6 (Upper Reactor Vessel 240 degrees) was declared inoperable due to excessive static on the channel. This was discovered during Baseline Impact Testing during startup from the End of Cycle 10 refueling outage. The static, believed to be attributable to a loose connection at the accelerometer, was severe enough for the channel to be declared inoperable. A Work order has been written to

(. pursue repairs. It was not possible to access this Channel's accelerometer to perform corrective action prior to Unit 1 Cycle 11 Startup. Repairs to this channel will be performed no.later than the upcoming Unit i refueling outage in 1999.

Channel 4 (Upper Reactor Vessel-0 degrees) and Channel 5 (Upper Reactor Vessel 120 degrees) are operable and afford sufficient coverage of the upper reactor vessel data collection region.

Questions on this Special Report should be directed to M.H.
