ENVIRONMENTAL LICENSEE EVENT REPORT 95E

1. Facility: Crystal River Unit #3
2. Report Date: August 18, 1977
3. Occurrence Date: July 28-29,1977 *
4. Identification of Occurrence:

Impingement sampling of fish and shellfish of Units 1, 2 and 3 was discontinued because of excessive seagrass load.

, 5. Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Unit #1 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit #2 - All water circulation pumps operational.

. Unit #3 - All water circulation pumps operational.

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period July 27, 1977 to July 31, 1977 an excessive amount of drifting seagrass and algae was impinging on and clogging the intake screens at the three units of the Crystal River site. This excessive and unusual influx of drift seagrass precluded sampling for impingement at the site. Sampling impingement during this period was not possible because plant -personnel were required to remove the sampling devices to clear the intake screens. Sampling was, of course, reinitiated during the week of August 1 - 7, 1977.

7. Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

< The cause of this event was the unusually large influx of drift sea-  ;

grass and algae which clogged the intake screens. The clogged intake screens, in turn, caused unusual plant operation of intake screens which necessitated removal of collection baskets.
