ENVIRONMENTAL LICENSEE EVENT REPORT 96E l

1. Facility: . Crystal River Unit #3 '
2. Report Date: August 18, 1977
3. Occurrence Date: August 1-2, 1977 .
4. Identification of Occurrence:

- Biomass of fish 'and shellfish impinged on the intake screens of Units 1, 2 and 3 exceeded the 50 kg/24hr reporting leml of ,

, section 3.1.3 of the Environmental Technical Specificaticas.

1

5. Conditions prior to Occurrence:

Unit #1 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit.f2 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit #3 - One of four water circulation pumps non-operational for entire sampling period.

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 0900 August 1,1977 to 0900 August 2,1977 58.81 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens of Crystal River Units 1, 2 and 3. Of the 58.81 kg impinged, Unit 3 accounted for 24.37 kg (41% of total). One conmercially unimportant species, the batfish accounted for 32.85 kg (56% of total). Two consnercially utilized ' species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounted for 13.05 kg j (22% of total). ' Impingement of all other coninercially utilized species was.less than 1 kg during the period in question. The 4

remaining biomass impinged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

7. Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusuO or periodic events were noted prior to -

or during the occurrence:

.1. Two' coal barges and one oil barge left the intake canal j ~ during-the sampling period.

2. On, m al barge entered the intake canal during the sampling period.

~

4

-3. A maintenance dredge entered and exited the intake canal during the sampling period.

'These events may have been partially responsible for the impingement observed.
