SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCES MARCH. 1980 E.T.0H 30TTOM ATOMIC PCWER STATION l

U?IIT 2 Unit 2 operated at its maximum coastdown capability until h rch 7 when it was removed from service to accccmodate repairs to the 2A recirculation pu=p seal. During the outage, additional problems were encountered with the minimum flow valve on the RHR system and with reactor water chemistry. The Unit wai returned to service on March 12.

The Unit reached full coastdown power on March 114 and continued in operation until March 21 when it was removed from service to accomodate the fourth refueling outage. Work during the outage willincludemaintenanceandsuppressionpool(torus) modifications. ,

Fuel handling was begun on March 27 On March 29, the 2D RHR pump tripped. Tests indicated motor grounds in phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground. An investigation into this occurrence is continuing. .

UNIT 3 On March 3, the 'A' loop of RER was declared inoperable due to the injection valve M0-10-25A failing to open during a surveillance test.

On March 5, the #1 transfomer at the North Substation tripped and that tripped the Unit 3 startup feed. This tripping caused fast transfer of various buses in the plant. Partial isolation of the primary containment occurred. While the isolations were being reset, the main steamline isolation valves began to drift closed, causing a reactor scram. After testing and investigation, the #1 transfor=er was returned to service (approximately 16. hours).

Following this scram, it was necessary that caintenance be perfor=ed on the MO-25A of the RHR system which had failed the surveillance test on March 3 Repairs to the RER valve were completed March 9 The reactor was restarted on March 10, but the return of the Unit to service was delayed until March 12 due to a failure of the seal of the drywell inner door during local leak rate testing. During the return to full power, a leak was discovered en the RCIC testable check valve and the Unit was shutdown in order to make repairs on March 13 The Unit was delayed in return to service due to a pressure seal leak in the outboard steam isolation _ valve (MO-16) for the Reactor Core Isolation (RCIC) turbine. The reactor was-shutdown and repairs were completed with the Unit being returned to service en March 16. On March 17, the Unit had reached 850 MWe when load was reduced to approximately 580 MWe in order to make a control rod pattern adjustment. Following the control rod pattern adjustment, the Unit increased power at the pre-conditioning rate, and reached rated power on March 20.
