ENVIRONMENTAL LICENSEE EVENT REPORT (# 77-35E)

1. Facility: Crystal River Unit #3
2. Report Date: 28 April 1977
3. Occurrence Date: 5-6 April, 1977
4. Identification of Occurrence:

Biomass of fish and shellfish impinged on the intake screens of Units 1, 2 and 3 exceeded the 50 kg/24hr reporting level of section 3.1.3 of the Environmental Technical Specifications.

5. Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Unit #1 - All water circulation pumpf non-operational (Unit 1 down, maintenance).

Unit #2 - All water circulation pumps operational. r Unit #3 - 1 of 4 water circulation pumps non-operational from 1000 ,

to 1115 on 4-5-77, all others operational. r-

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 1000 April 5, 1977 to 1000 April 6, 1977 m\ 74.14 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens of Crystal River Units 1, 2 and 3. Of the 74.14 kg impinged, Unit 3 accounted for 45.96 kg (62% of total). Two comercially unimportant species, the batfish and the cowfish-accounted for 31.23 kg (42% of total). Two comercially utilized species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounted for 31.74 kg (43% of total). Impingement of all other commercially utilized species was less than 1 kg during the period in question. The remaining biomass impinged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

7. Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusual or periodic events were noted prior to or during the occurrence:

A. Barge traffic One oil barge left the intake canal B. Strong NW winds (15-25 knots) throughout sample period.

These events may have been partially responsibic for the impingement observed. -
