ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50. 55 (e) , ITEM M-49, RADIOGRAPHIC AND WELD DEFICIENCIES FOR SACRIFICIAL SHIELDS CONTAINMENT MONORAIL AND VENT STACK WELDS W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, M-49 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject conditions initially reported to the Commission on May 10, 1982 under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (e) .

As stated in our previous report, QA-2272, dated February 23, 1983, certain unacceptable areas in the sacrificial shield welds were identified from the radiographic film review. These areas will be either repaired or accepted based on fracture mechanics analysis. The welds will also be brought up to the visual acceptance criteria of AWS D.l.1-1972, " Structural Welding Code" or the design will be adjusted to take no credit for weld areas not meeting this criteria.

The status of the reradiography of the welds on the Monorail and Vent Stack remains unchanged from our previous report.

Scheduling and completion of the corrective action is contingent upon the NRC release of the November 12, 1982 " Order to Show Cause and Order Immediately Suspending Construction" for work in this area. A schedule for completion of the corrective action will be submitted at that time.
