ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e), ITEM S-10, MASONRY WALL CONSTRUCTION NOT PER DESIGN REQUIREMENTS W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, S-10 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition reported to the Commission on May 13, 1983 as a potentially reportable deficiency under 50.55(e). It was agreed in a December 22, 1983 telephone conversation between W. Forney (NRC) and G.C. Ficke (CG&E) that the date for submittal of this report would be extended from December 23, 1983 to December 27, 1983. _Our previous report, LOZ-83-0134, was submitted on September 21, 1983.

I The safety implications of the conditions reported in the masonry walls are not readily apparent. Analyses and walkdowns to detarmine potential safety interactions, and further physical examinations would be required to make a determination of l reportability. We are directing our action toward a reinspection and corrective action program as though this condition is reportable.

i The reinspection and corrective action program considers alternate methods of assuring the adequacy of the masonry walls by adding structural members or by reinspection, including ultrasonic examination to minimize destructive testing. Upon selection of an acceptable program, we will perform the program in accordance with the Course of Action approved by the NRC Region III on December 16, 1983. A final report of the reinspection and corrective action will be supplied when the program is completed.
