Docket No. 50-358 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region'III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Attention: Mr.'J.G. Keppler Regional Administrator Gentlemen:

RE: WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e), ITEM E-50, ANNUNCIATOR SYSTEM REPLACEMENT LIGHT BULBS W.O. 57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, E-50 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition reported to the Commission on August 23, 1983 under 10CFR50.55(e).

In our last report, LOZ-83-0199, submitted November 9, 1983,

CGEE outlined the corrective actions being considered to l

eliminate short circuits and fires in the annuciator window boxes. The following is the status of those corrective actions:

1. Dimmer rheostats for the lamp circuits in the Main Control Room Annuciator System will be permanently bypassed to minimize the line resistance and to maximize the short circuit current resulting in a more reliable circuit breaker trip on the lamp
circuits.
2. Existing lamp sockets (approximately 4000) will be replaced with sockets which do not have the " shaving" effect on the lamp base as described in our last report.

Engineering Change Request (ECR) 928 has been initiated to implement these design changes. As part of the corrective action light bulbs will continue to be checked for excessive filament lead wires.

Mr. J.G. Keppler Regional Administrator January ~16, 1984 LOZ-84-0002 Page 2 Although the Annunciator System is not a nuclear safety-related system, the_ annunciator lamp boxes are installed in both safety and nonsafety-related panels. Becausc of their location in safety-related panels, replacement of the existing lamp sockets will be completed after the lifting of the NRC November 12, 1982 " Order to Show Cause and Order Immediately Suspending Construction" for this work. A final report will be submitted upon completion of the corrective action.

We trust the above will be found acceptable as an interim report under 10CFR50.55(e).

Very truly yours, THE CINCINNATI GAS & ELECTRIC COMPANY
