TIIE CINCINNATI GAS & ELECTRIC COMI%NY CINCINNATI. OHIO 45208 October 18, 1983 LOZ-83-0183 J. WILLIAM S, JR semiOm vice passinant NUCLEAm OrtRATIONS Docket No. 50-358 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Attention:
Mr. J.G. Keppler Regional Administrctor Gentlemen:
RE:
WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e), ITEM E-46, LACK OF CERTIFICATION FOR TYPE SIS SWITCHBOARD WIRE W.O.
57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, E-46 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition initially reported to the Commission on July 13, 1983 as a potentially reportable deficiency under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (c).
Our last report, LOZ-83-0106, was submitted August 22, 1983.
As stated in our previous report, uncertified Type SIS wire was utilized in safety related panels and enclosures, and was found acceptable without further action outside of harsh environments.
CG&E is conducting further reviews and evaluations to determine the acceptability of Type SIS wire in harsh t
environments.
Until completion of this evaluation, we cannot determine if this condition represents a deficiency that could have adversely affected the safe operations of the plant.
Therefore, this condition is still considered to be a potentially reportable item.
The status of the corrective actions identified in our last report is given below:
l.
The Architect Engineer, Sargent & Lundy, has issued a
(
Design Document Change (SLE-577) revising the Electrical Installation Specification (H-2173) to require the use of certified Type SIS wire for future
[
applications.
2.
The procurement documents for type SIS wire have identified ITE, General Electric, and Anaconda as the gDRADOCK05000

Mr.'J.G. Keppler Regional Administrator October 18, 1983 LOZ-83-0183 Page 2 manufacturers that supplied the majority of Type SIS wire at Zimmer.
These manufacturers have been requested to determine whether the previously purchased wire meets the environmental requirements of IEEE 323-1974 and IEEE 383-1974 and to provide certification if it cor.fornis.
However, several Purchase Orders issued to vendors did not clearly indicate the manufacturer of the wire.
These vendors are being requested to identify the Type SIS wire which they had supplied CG&E.
i In the event that every manufacturer cannot provide certification for its wire, CG&E has initiated the identification of wiring modifications in safety related panels and enclosures in harsh environments.
Preliminary results of this review confirm that a significant amount of modifications using Type SIS wire were performed in panels and enclosures in harsh environments.
A follow-up report will be submitted by January 31, 1984.
We trust the above will be found acceptable as an interim report under 10CFR50.55(e).
Very truly yours, THE CINCINNATI GAS & ELECTRIC COMPANY By LLIAMS, JR SENIOR VICE PRE IDENT DJS/WPC/sfr
