SUBJECT:

Fort St. Vrain Additional Tendon Inspection

REFERENCE:

I & E Information Notice 85-10 (G-85053)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

We have been following the prestressing tendon problems discovered at Farley, both in terms of information provided by the above reference and by direct contact. We believe our system is somewhat different from Farley's, but given the serious nature of possible prestressing system failures, we have evaluated our position and feel it is prudent to conduct some additional inspections of a random sample of the PCRV bottom head longitudinal tendon anchor assemblies.

In this respect, we have determined that 34 of the longitudinal bottom end caps are accessible (some require some modification to make them accessible). We are preparing to select 10 of the end caps for removal and inspection. We will remove the caps, degrease the washer assembly and perform visual inspections for indications of concavity or apparent failures or anchor assembly degradation. We will also document general conditions found including evidence of moisture of possible general corrosion.

It is our intent to begin the inspection effort immediately. We will provide you with the results of this inspection effort the week of f O-[I June 3, 1985.
