The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region II staff on this data.

SUBJECT:

UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN LONGER THAN 48 HOURS Florida Power and Light (FPL) took Turkey Point Unit 3 out of service at 6 p.m. (EST) y;sterday, in accordance with the unit technical specifications, after a steam supply stop check valve in each auxiliary feedwater (AFW) system train was found to be damaged. The unit is expected to be shut down more than 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> for repairs.

On Turkey Point Unit 4, an AFW steam supply stop check valve found to be damaged on January 1 was repaired, and the unit remained on line. Yesterday, however, further investigation by FPL revealed damage to another AFW steam supply stop check valve, placing the unit in a 72-hour limiting condition for operation. FPL is now inspecting the remainder of the /JW steam supply stop check valves, a process being monitored by R:gion II. Unit 4 is scheduled to shut down for refueling on January 11.

FPL is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
