Subject:

UNPLANNED RELEASE OF RADIOACTIVE LIQUID Our Region II (Atlanta) office was notified by the licensee on April 14, 1975, that an unplanned release of radioactive liquid had occurred on April 13, 1975, at about 8:25 am.

No apparent threat to the health and safety of the public resulted.

About 7400 gallons of water from the spent fuel pool (SFP) wa's released m

~ when the discharge line on a temporary pump in the SFP cooling system came loose. Approximately 60% of the spill has been collected in a

-3 hold up waste tank.

The balance was released to the ground outside k

the building with some passing under a fence, but remaining within FP&L fenced property.

The concentration of the liquid was 2.8x10-3 micro Ci/ml, identified primarily as cobalt 58.

(The NRC permissible concentrations of this isotope within restricted and unrestricted areas are 3x10-3,and 9x10-5, respectively, when averaged over a year).

Based upon preliminary information, we believe that the safety implications of this event are minimal. We are distributing this information because of publicity which may result from a press release currently being considered by tha Office of Public Affairs.

Region II inspectors arrived at the site for a schsduled inspect::

on April 15, 1975, and will followup on this occurrence.
