i In the above referenced letter, Commonwealth Edison Company submitted a re-evaluation report pertaining to 10 CFR part 50, Appendix R for Quad Cities Nuclear. Power Station in response to NRC Staff positions prescribed in-Generic Letter 83-33, dated October 19,-1983.

This report provided several Exemption Requests from the Requirement of 10 CFR 50,. Appendix R.

Exemption 3

5.2, " Justification for Lack of complete 3-Hour Fire Barriers Between the'

)

Southern and Central Zone Groups" requires clarification.

In addition to the open doorway between the Western portion of the Central Zone Group (Fire Zone 8.2.6.C) and the Unit 1 CRD pump Area (Fire Zone 8.2.3.A) there are two 3 foot diameter openings for the man-lift. Also..a 10' x 10' pipe hatch between these areas is open at the condensate pump level (Fire Zone 8.2.1.A).

As with the doorway opening, there is no continuity of combustibles between the zone j

j groups near these openings and automatic sprinkler protection is provided for fire zones 8.1.2.A and 8.2.3.A.

This letter is being provided as clarification to the exemption request 5.2 in anticipation of the upcoming Quad Cities Station Appendix R audit.
