Subject:

Submittal of Technical Information Regarding Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) Suction Strainers

Reference:

Letter from J. P. Dimmette, Jr. (Comed), SVP-99-012, to USNRC, dated i January 29,1999, " Request for License Amendment Pursuant to 10 l CFR 50.90 Credit for Containment Overpressure" The purpose of this letter is to transmit technical information regarding the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) suction strainers at Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2. During a May 201999 teleconference between R.M. Pulsifer (USNRC) and Commonwealth Edison (Comed) Company, the NRC requested head loss information to support the review of the referenced license amendment request regarding containment overpressure credit. In April 1998, head loss testing of a clean Unit 1 ECCS suction strainer was performed and the test results are contained in the g attached report. The flow versus head loss curve for the strainer was used to t determine a resistance coefficient (K). Note that Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station l Calculation ODC-1000-M-0419 is the hydraulic ECCS model provided in support of the referenced submittal, which used a clean strainer K value equal to 1.16. This K value is consistent with the information contained in the attached report.
