POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

MINOR EXPLOSION IN HYDROGEN GAS STORAGE AREA At 11:35 PM on August 29, 1978, five plant personnel were conducting repairs to a manifold in the hydrogen gas storage area. A leak was  ;

detected upon completion of the repairs when the manifold was returned to service. While attempting to stop the leak, a small explosion i i

occurred. All five men were taken to a local hospital. Three were '

released after treatment for minor burns; two remain at the hospital u,,

undergoing treatment for second degree burns.

(- The cause for ignition of the hydrogen gas has not been determined. All precautionary measures were stated to have been employed for working with explosive gases. This is a non-nuclear, industrial event. Plant systems were not affected.

The State of New York and OSHA have been informed. The news media is covering the event and a press release is planned by the licensee.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Plant Manager at 8:30 AM, August 30, 1978.
