presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by OIE staff as of 1:00 p.m. on e date of this notification. IT SHOULD BE SPECIFICALLY NOTED THAT THIS NOTIFICATION MAY CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT LATER MAY BE DETERMINED TO BE INACCURATE OR INCONSISTENT. AN OFFICE OF INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT NOTIFICATION OF AN INCIDEUT OR OCCURRENCE (BLUE SHEET) SUBSEQUENTLY WILL BE ISSUED IF WARRANTED.

FACILITY: Indian Ppint 2 (DN 50-247)

SUBJECT:

HIGH FISH MORTALITY On January 21 and 22, 1976, fish mortality (primarily white perch about 2" in length) on the intake screens of the Circulation Water System was 12,799 and 18,233 respectively. The latter value exceeded the Environmental Tech-nical Specification action level of 15,000 in any one day. It is likely that the action level of 5,000 per day on three consecutive days will be exceeded after today's fish count.

i i

To reduce mortality one of five operating circulation water pumps was shut-down on January 22. The pump shutdown did not necessitate a power reduction from full power but a reduction will be necessary if additional. pumps are,

  • stopped. This could occur over the coming weekend if high fish mortality continues.

Media interest is expected because of current licensing action on Indian Point 3 and because of press attention given to environmental matters and O plant availability. The State of New York has been informed. A press release is not planned.

OIE received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Consoli- N dated Edison Company at 10:15 a.m., January 23. C k
