UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN An unplanned shutdown was instituted at 1:15 p.m., October 16, 1975, due to an electrical fault in the main generator. A short was found in the C phase, apparently caused by a metal cylinder found lodged in the wind-  !

ings. The source of the cylinder is unknown. ,

~ Duration of the shutdown is not yet established. It will be a minimum of l one week for correction of this problem. Stator rework, which could j

-"= take an additional four to five weeks, is being considered. ,

'- i j Media interest is expected because of close attention paid to nuclear '

facility availability. The State of New York has been and is being kept informed. A press release is planned by the licensee.

OIE received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Mr. Makepiece, Director of Technical Engineering, at 9:00 a.m., October 20, 1975.
