UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN An unplanned shutdown was instituted at 1:15 p.m.,

October 16, 1975, due to an electrical fault in the main generator. A short was found in the C phase, apparently caused by a metal cylinder found lodged in the wind-ings. The source of the cylinder is unknown.

~ Duration of the shutdown is not yet established.

It will be a minimum of l

one week for correction of this problem.

Stator rework, which could j

take an additional four to five weeks, is being considered.

Media interest is expected because of close attention paid to nuclear facility availability. The State of New York has been and is being kept informed. A press release is planned by the licensee.

OIE received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Mr. Makepiece, Director of Technical Engineering, at 9:00 a.m., October 20, 1975.
