SUBJECT:

REACTOR CONTAINMENT CONCRETE EXAMINATION qc; $x UNIT 1 '- = l DOCKET No. 50-289

Dear Mr. DeYoung:

in response to your letter of September 27, 1973, the upper bearing plates for vertical tendons number V-79 and V-105 were removed on September 28, 1973. The subsequent inspection of the concrete beneath the bearing plates was made in the presence of Mr. Seth Folsom of the Atomic Energy Comission's Regulatory Operations Region I office.

The inspection indicated the following:

(1) Typical surface voids due to air and water migration were considered normal.

(2) Honey Combing did not exist.

(3) The concrete surface was observed to be sound and capable of transferring the tendon prestress force into the structure.

(4) There was no evidence of concrete crushing, cracking, spalling, or any other destress.

It was concluded that the concrete is sound and appropriate for its intended use.

~

Very truly yours, N . g .,
