Dear Dr. Travers,
As a resident of Eastern Long Island, I am seriously concerned about the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant a mere 14 miles across the Long Island Sound in Connecticut.
This nuclear power plant has the worst safety record of any plant in the country. Despite its history of safety violations (the NRC has cited and fined this plant repeatedly), mishaps have continued at an alarming rate. I am especially concerned that there is NO ESCAPE, NO EVACUATION possible for Eastern Long Islanders. Were an accident to occur at Millstone, which is increasingly likely, we would be trapped and unable to move out of harm's way.
You MUST act, as our representative to shut down Millstone. And in the mean time, you must provide adequate emergency planning in case of radiological accident. This is an important and essential resonsibility and we are relying on your immediate action.
Early in June the Connecticut newspaper, London Day, reponed that Northeast U'tilities in preparation for reopening # 2 reactor also decided to refuel #3 reactor. It was al;o reported that " poor plannini; for current refueling outage at Millstone #3 Nuclear Power Plant led to a series of "near Misses" which increased the chance for an accident that could have damaged the core reactor. Within the last 2 weeks reactor # 3 has been restarted. This is alarming considering the prior mishaps that were reported.
You cannot allow this plant to operate and threaten us with "near misses" of core meltdown. Don;t be responsibile for another CHERNOBYL. Don't allow this company in Connecticut to create another Three Mile Island on Long Island.
Please do something RIGHT NOW. And please write back and let me know WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO SHUT DOWN MILLSTONE.

.' Nuclear Power Plant a mere 14 miles across the long Island Sound in Connecticut.
. This nuclear power plant has the worst safety record of any plant in the country. Despite
.its history of safety violations ~(the NRC has cited and fined this plant repeatedly), mishaps have continued at an alarming rate. -I ain' especially concerned that there is NO ESCAPE, NO
' EVACUATION possible for Eastern Long Islanders. 'Were an accident to occur at Millstone, which is increasingly likely, we would be trapped and unable to move out of harm's way.
You MUST act, as our representative to shut down Millstone. And in the mean time, you must provide adequate emergency planning in' case of radiological accident. This is an important and essential resonsibility and we are relying on your immediate action.
Early in June the Connecticut newspaper, London Day, reported that Northeast Utilities in preparation for reopening # 2 reactor also decided to refuel #3 reactor. It was also reported that " poor planning for current refueling outage at Millstone #3 Nuclear Power Plant led to a ,
series of "near Misses" which increased the chance for an accident that could have damaged the core reactor. Within the last 2 weeks reactor # 3 has been restarted. This is alarming considering i the prior mishaps that were reported. i You cannot allow this plant to operate and threaten us with "near misses" of core l meltdown. Don;t be responsibile for another CHERNOBYL. Don't allow this company in i Connecticut to create another Three Mile Island on Long Island.
Please do something RIGHT NOW. And please write back and let me know WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO SHUT DOWN MILLSTONE.
h i . Sincerely, f L -

Dear President Clinton:
I' write to you again'about my concern regarding the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in.Waterford, Conn. I live in eastern Long Island,'less than 20 miles away from the plant. It '
has the worst safety record of any nuclear facility in the United States. And, there is NO EVACUATION PLAN for eastern Long Island. Years ago, emergency planners concluded that it would be j impossible to evacuate eastern Long Island-and, the population l has only grown since then. In spite of our vulnerable position, the NRC has given Northeast Utilities the approval to operate two reactors (Units #2 & #3) at the plant. And, the day'before the unit #2 was to restart, unit #3 was partially shut down ("a cold shut down") for internal' problems. This situation is dangerous.
-We would like you to know how difficult it is.to get off Long Island in an automobile. Why can't.you come out here some weekend 'in the summer, say on a Friday night, and leave-on a Sunday evening? You would find yourself'as terrified as we are about the prospects of a nuclear mishap at Millstone.
Please, come and experience the natural beauty and special geographical circumstances of our island before you make any more ,
. decisions that can seriously compromise our future, destroy the i future of our children. And, until adequate measures for I emergency safety procedures and evacuation are sufficiently established, we demand that you use your power as President--
especially one concerned with environmental issues -to pressure the NRC to CLOSE DOWN MILLSTONE. cp W V
I Please pay attention to this terrible threat to public safety 3 Sincerely, i g
