SUBJECT:

SHUTDOWN EXCEEDING 48 HOURS Farley Unit 2 was manually shut down from 33 percent power on December 9 at 10:57 a.m. EST to repair a leak believed to be in a 6-inch pipe to elbow weld. The unidentified leak rate was 0.7 gpm. The leak is non-isolatable in the safety injection line in the cold leg of "B" recirculation loop. The plant is being placed in cold shutdown for repair. A five- to ten-day outage is anticipated. Unit 2 was in power ascension following a refueling outage.

Unit I was shut down on December 7 for an 11-day maintenance outage.

Th State of Alabama has been informed.

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee at 12:14 p.m. (EST) on December 9.
