FAILURE OF SAFEGUARDS SYSTEMS PUMPS TFe Westinghouse Electric Corporation notified NRC on August 12, 1977 that a production lot of abuut forty (40) pumps supplied by Facific Pump Company appears to have been manufactured using snafts made of inferior

and North Anna. Of these, Zion, Salem and Farley are in the operational ph::e.
Westinghause personnel are presently conducting an investigation to

detennine the cause of the failures.
The early indications are that
~J-the pump shaf t matorial may not have been heat treated properly causing brittle fatigue failura.
The failures have been experienced af ter mre then 5,000 'tcurs of pump operation.
Some of the suspect pumps have operated suostsntially longer than 5,000 hoitrs witnout problems.
All utilities with suspect pumps have been notified by Westingh'ouse.
Mtdia interest has nnt been evident and is not anticioated.
