The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date. SUBJECT:
EXTENDED OUTAGE FOR TURBINE REPAIR The unit was shut down at 8:00 p.m. on October 20, due to turbine bearing vibration indications on the main Westinghouse turbine (829 MWe). Preliminary examination indicated that one or more turbine shrouds were thrown from row 2 of the low pressure turbine. Similar events have occurred at the Turkey Point and Robinson plants in the past. A shutdown of at least 10 days is estimated. No media interest is expected. A news release is not planned by the licensee or the NRC. The State of Alabama hcs been notified. This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only and no further action by IE is anticipated. Region II (atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the P'. ant Manager at 3:30 p.m. on October 20. This information is currcht.as.of 9:00.a.m. on October 21.
