ACTIONS IN RESPONSE TO HURRICANE "ELENA" The National Weather Service upgraded tropical storm "Elena" to a hurricane at 9 a.m.

(EDT) today.

R:gion II has contacted Alabama Power Company, Florida Power Corporation, and Mississippi

, Power and Light Company regarding implementation of hurricane procedures at the Farley, Crystal River and Grand Gulf facilities. The region also continues to monitor the hurricane's status.

As of 11 a.m. today, "Elena" was located at latitude 25 degrees north and longitude 85 d:grees west, or about 375 miles southeast of New Orleans. The hurricane continues to move northwest at 20 miles per hour. It is expected to turn gradually toward the north and slow down during the next 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br />.

A hurricane warning is in effect from Morgan City, Louisiana, to Pensacola, Florida.

"Elena" is now a nominal hurricane, but conditions indicate it could grow in intensity.

Media coverage of the storm is ongoing.

The states of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi have been informed.
