ACTIONS IN RESPONSE TO HURRICANE "ELENA" - UPDATE This PN updates PN0-II-85-86 issued on August 29, 1985.

Region II is continuing to monitor the course of Hurricane "Elena".

As of 9 a.m. (EDT) today, the hurricane was near latitude 28.0 north and longitude 87.5 west, about 160 miles south of Pensacola, Florida.

At its present location, the hurricane is moving toward the north at 9 mph. Highest winds are 100 mph. Tides of 8 to 12 feet above normal are expected near and to the right of where the center crosses the coast. Statements regarding evacuation and specific actions to be taken are being issued by local government officials and the National Weather Service.

a The National Weather Service projects between now and 1 a.m. the percentages for " Hurricane Elena" passing within 65 miles of certain coastal locations are: (1) 39 percent Pensacola,

  • Florida, (2) 32 percent Mobile, Alabama, (3) 20-28 percent for Apalachicola and Panama City, Florida, and (4) 11-23 percent for New Orleans and Buras, Louisiana.

Region II has confirmed that officials at the Crystal River, Farley, and Grand Gulf sites are aware of the hurricane's location and are prepared to implement appropriate procedures.

Media coverage of " Hurricane Elena" is continuing.

The States of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi have been informed of Region II activities.
