VICE PEEllDENT NUCLE AR OPERATKp65 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention: Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director

Dear Mr. Denton:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. 50-416 and 50-417 License No. NPF-29 File: 0260/17015 Clarification of Response to Humphrey Concern on Steam Condensing Mode

Reference:

AECM-86/0012 dated January 28, 1986 AECM-86/0143 The purpose of this letter is to clarify Mississippi Power & Light's (MP&L) planned actions to resolve the concern of possible loads from " chugging" as a result of steam and non-condensible gases being vented to the suppression pool through the Residual Heat Removal (RHR) relief valve discharge line. This was previously discussed in the referenced correspondence.

MP&L has determined that each RHR heat exchanger vent line header should have a dedicated discharge line to the suppression pool. These lines will be sized to preclude chugging. Final engineering and design on this modification is not complete and no firm schedule has been established for implementation.

MP&L will continue to prohibit the use of the RHR steam condensing mode until the modification is fully implemented.

Should you have any further questions regarding this matter please advise.

Yours ly, l
