Dear Mr. Denton:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-29 MP&L Schedule for Completion of Plant Modifications Identified for Literal Compliance With 10CFR50, Appendix R AECM-86/0274 On August 26, 1986, a telephone conference was held between Mississippi Power & Light (MP&L), NRC Region II Division of Reactor Projects and the NRC-NRR Project Manager regarding MP&L's schedule for implementing those plant modifications identified by MP&L as required to bring Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) into literal compliance with 10CFR50 Appendix R. This letter is provided to document MP&L's commitment to that schedule.

By letter dated May 7, 1985 MPSL submitted for NRC review a report (AECM-85/0129) summarizing it's detailed analysis of GGNS compliance with sections III.G, J, and L of 10CFR50 Appendix R. Contained in this report were commitments to modify 'certain fire protection features to bring GGNS into literal compliance with 10CFR50 Appendix R. These commitments were expanded and modified by letters dated May 18, 1985 (AECM-85/0165), July 24, 1986 (AECM-86/0190) and July 31, 1986 (AECM-86/0209). A large percentage of the work associated with these modifications is now essentially complete. At the commencement of the first refueling outage (RF01), there will be ten (10) outstanding plant modifications (DCP's). Seven (7) DCP's are scheduled for completion during RF01 and three (3) DCP's are scheduled for completion by June 30, 1987. All ten (10) modifications will be completed no later than June 30, 1987.

! Attached is MP&L's schedule for completion of the remaining ten (10)

DCP's. MP&L will notify the NRC of any changes to the schedule involving those DCP's scheduled for completion by the end of the first refueling outage.
