T TROJAN NUCLEAR PLANT Summary of Operating Experience March 1988 The plant entered the month in Mode 1 at 100% power.

Increasing Containment noble gas activity which was first noted in late February continued in early March. A small leak from the pressurizer vapor space was indicated. Several Containment entries were made in an effort to locate and repair the leak. On

!! arch 4, a packing leak on pressurizer steam space sample valve MO-5658 was found and isolated. Containment noble gas activity steadily decreased after this valve was isolated.

On March 7 at 1206 hours0.014 days
0.335 hours
0.00199 weeks
4.58883e-4 months
, power was reduced to 88% to shut down the north heater drain pump due to a steam leak at the pump gland follower. Power was returned to 100% at 1409 hours0.0163 days
0.391 hours
0.00233 weeks
5.361245e-4 months
after the pump was isolated. Repairs to the pump were completed the following day. On March 8 at 2015 hours0.0233 days
0.56 hours
0.00333 weeks
7.667075e-4 months
, power was reduced to 95% to permit the heater drain pump to be restarted. Power was restored to 100%

at 2200.

On March 11 at 0011 hours1.273148e-4 days
0.00306 hours
1.818783e-5 weeks
4.1855e-6 months
, power was reduced to 90% for main turbine control valve testing. Power was returned to 100% at 0145.

On March 24 a single failure mechanism of the nitrogen pressure regulator for the Nitrogen Supply System to the Containment electrical penetrations was discovered. The single failure mechanism had the potential to pressurize the penetration seals to above their design pressure. Nitrogen to the seals was isolated, and a shiftly check of Nitrogen pressure on the seals was commenced. A four-hour report to the NRC was made on this finding.

On March 25 ac 0100 hours0.00116 days
0.0278 hours
1.653439e-4 weeks
3.805e-5 months
, power was reduced to 90% for main turbine control valve testing. Power was returned to 100% at i 0231.

On March 27 at 0501 hours0.0058 days
0.139 hours
8.28373e-4 weeks
1.906305e-4 months
. a grid disturbance caused by the

, tripping of ? Coalstrip units lowered system frequency causing power to increase to 102.3%. Power was immediately reduced to j 100%.

On March 28 it was discovered that four feedwater line drain l valves which are Containment isolation valves were open to permit

! monitoring for feed line pressure excursions. A one-hour report I was made to the NRC and the valves were closed.

l l

Maintenance Repaired instrument problem on 'A' auxiliary feedwater pump speed controller.

Repaired 'B' Joy air compressor which had been tripping on high temperature.

-- Repaired steam leak on north heater drain pump.

License Amendments No license amendments were received during March.
