TROJAN NUCLEAR PLANT Summary of Operating Experience-August 1987 OPERATIONS The plant entered the month in Mode 5.

'An extensive evaluation was performed in August to demonstrate the adequacy of' rock bolts used for pipe supports. Embeddment depth and load cap: city of rock bolts were verified by inspections and testing.

The results of the evaluation were presented to the NRC in a meeting on August 20 at which time the NRC concurred that the pipe support design was adequate to allow plant startup.

Plant heatup commenced on August 21. Mode 4 was entered at 0923 hours0.0107 days
0.256 hours
0.00153 weeks
3.512015e-4 months
and Mode 3 was entered at 1348 hours0.0156 days
0.374 hours
0.00223 weeks
5.12914e-4 months
. , Reactor startup began on August 25 with Mode 2 entered at 0406 hours0.0047 days
0.113 hours
6.712963e-4 weeks
1.54483e-4 months
and reactor criticality attained at 0628 hours0.00727 days
0.174 hours
0.00104 weeks
2.38954e-4 months
. Low power physics testing began on August 25 and w*s completed on August 26. '

A turbine trip and feedwater isolation occurred on Hi-Hi steam generator ,

level on August 26 at 2110 hours0.0244 days
0.586 hours
0.00349 weeks
8.02855e-4 months
due to failure of a feedwater regulating l valve to fully close. Mode 1 was entered on August 27 at 1405 hours0.0163 days
0.39 hours
0.00232 weeks
5.346025e-4 months
, I the generator was synchronized tc the grid at 1435 hours0.0166 days
0.399 hours
0.00237 weeks
5.460175e-4 months
, and power was stabilized at 30% at 1810 hours0.0209 days
0.503 hours
0.00299 weeks
6.88705e-4 months
for testing and chemistry control.

On August 28,1987 at 0830 hours0.00961 days
0.231 hours
0.00137 weeks
3.15815e-4 months
a turbine trip and feedwater isolation occurred on Hi-Hi steam generator level due to . operator error while controlling feedwater flow. The plant was returned to operation at 1345 hours0.0156 days
0.374 hours
0.00222 weeks
5.117725e-4 months
and power was again stabilized at 30% at 2030 hours0.0235 days
0.564 hours
0.00336 weeks
7.72415e-4 months
for testirg '

and chemistry control. i On August 30 power escalation to 50% power began and at 2225 hours0.0258 days
0.618 hours
0.00368 weeks
8.466125e-4 months
50% j power was attained. On August 31 at about 1630 hours0.0189 days
0.453 hours
0.0027 weeks
6.20215e-4 months
, a phase to ground fault occurred in the west circulating water pump motor. The pump motor ;

was sent offsite to be rewound. The pump will be unavailable for about four weeks which will result in a power limitation of about 65%.

MAINTENANCE The following major maintenance was completed during August:

The reactor vessel head vent valves were replaced.

 • The remainder of feedwater piping exhibiting erosion / corrosion was replaced.

I l

i 1 y,; ,

Summary of Operating Experience Page Two Miscellaneous. pipe support maintenance was performed.

Control Room to Cable Spreading Room cable penetrations were sealed.

' Repaired a leaking instrument port on the reactor vessel head. o

 • Control Room indicating lights were replaced with light emitting diodey, a

OTHER > @j A reactor coolant system hydrostatic test was completed. 2i ;[;j Local leak rate testing of Containment penetrations was completed. g pd s: c LICENSE AMENDMENTS ,g

=

Two Amendments to the Trojan Operating. License were received:

Amendment 132: Clarifies the requirements for the-onsite electrical distribution system.

, andment 133: Revises the steam generator tube surveillance requirements to relax the tube plugging criteria for indications in the tube sheet region.
