. TROJAN NUCLEAR' PLANT DOCKET NO: 50-344

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE DATE: 8-6-86 COMPLETED BY: F. J. Ulmer TELEPHONE: 503-556-3713 OPERATIONS:

The Trojan Nuclear Plant entered the month of July in Mode 1 at full power and maintained full power through the end of the month.

During July the reactor coolant dose equivalent iodine remained constant at 10.6% of the 1 mei/gm technical specification limit and steam gene-rator leakage remained steady at 1/2 gpd.

A new heat balance procedure based on a primary calorimeter was imple-mented which compensates for feedwater flow element fouling and allows the reactor to operate at or near full thermal power throughout the fuel cycle.

MAJOR SAFETY-RELATED MAINTENANCE:

Testing of the mechanical overspeed mechanism of the turbine-driven auxiliary feedwater pump was conducted in order to remove the electrical overspeed unit. The removal of the electrical overspeed unit was based upon reliability reviews of the auxiliary feedwater system. It was found that the mechanical overspeed unit was not reliable, therefore, the electrical-overspeed unit was verified operable and the mechan-ical trip was disabled. The turbine vendor is scheduled to be on-site in September to assist in the repair and testing of the mechanical trip device.

MISCELLANEOUS MAINTENANCE:

1. Replacement of a digital rod position indication (DRPI) card occurred for control rod C-7 due to card failure.
2. The 'A' spent fuel pool cooling pump was completely overhauled to include a new one-piece pump shaft and new bearing design.
3. The corrosion inhibitor for the component cooling water system was changed, action taken to return the system to within specif1-cations. The type of corrosion inhibitor used caused erroneous analytical results for system chlorides.
4. Recalibration was conducted for loop 'B' reactor coolant system flow indication due to higher than normal indication.

MISCELLANEOUS:

1. An NRC audit was conducted of Trojan's safety parameter display system (Westinghouse P-2500 computer system).
2. An NRC audit of Security was conducted during July 22 to July 31, 1986.
3. An NRC audit of procurement (purchasing) of materials was conducted July 14 to July 19, 1986.
4. Trojan was aesignated a branch member of the National Academy for Nuclear Training based on the recent accreditation of three operator training programs.
