Dear Sir:

i I

_ Our Health Physics Manager has completed her review of ahe current MURR ALARA Program in  ;

October, using Regulatory Guide 8.8 as a reference. In her assessment, our program needs strengthening .j

';

~ in the area of docimienting the ALARA work we are doing. The proposed improvements in documenting ALARA will "close the loop" on our Program by consolidating descriptions of our ALARA efforts and

.their dose results to show more clearly the evaluation of " reasonably achievable." To generate this documentation, we will expand the written monthly summaries submitted by our supervisors and l researchers to include reporting their ALARA efforts. We will also increase requircments on the review ~!

of doses to their personnel. The emphasis on increased reporting of ALARA work will help us maintain 1

'

a higher level of awareness and stress our commitment to ALARA. We will establish the format and

.

, types of ALARA information we need for each of our groups with the respective supervisors.

As we committed in our September 7,1989 letter, this proposed change to formalize the ALARA program was reviewed during November. Over the next few months we will test ourideas of how to best provide this ALARA feedback. We conveyed to your staff in a November 30,1989 telephone conversation that March 31,1990 is our goal to have the program fully implemented. If you have any  ;

questions or need additional information, please call me at 314/882-5204. -l Sincerely, ,

y i
