l NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMENTS ON l ANS 10.4 GUIDELINES F0F.THE VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING COMPUTER PROGRAMS FOR THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY l

i l The standard is acceptable as written. However, because the standard dates from 1987 l the standard does not incorporate the many lessons learned by the computer industry in l the last decade. The working group for this standard should consider updating the l standard as soon as possible to apply the state of the practice to verification and validation-of software reflected in IEEE standards. Most of these standards were written for commercial use and contain the flexibility to be modified for software projects of varying safety significance.

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMENTS ON ANS 15.20 CONTROL AND SAFETY SYSTEMS FOR RESEARCH REACTORS The standard is acceptable as written. However, thia standard has been under development since 1987 when a working group was put into place to specifically incorporate the use of computer technology into this standard. We believe this version of .

the standard does not incorporate'the many lessons learned by the computer industry in the last decade and should be updated at the first revision. For example, the unty software document referenced is NUREG/CR 4640, " Handbook of Sof tware Quality Assurance

. Techniques Appilcable to the Nuclear industry" (August,1987) which in to n references other documents from the early 80's. We recommend that this standard ieference current IEEE standards in this area. Most of these standards were written for commercial use and contain the flexibility to be modified for software projects of varying safety significance.
