SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket Nc. 50-416 License No. NPF-29 Limited Deferral of Inspections on the Division II EDG, Supplemental Information AECM-87/0179 System Energy Resources, Incorporated (SERI) provided the basis for incorporating certain remaining inspections on the Division II Emergency Diesel generator into a later schedule 5-year confirmatory inspection. The above basis was provided by letter dated June 30, 1987 (AECM-87/0065).

During the NRC staff review of the above report, NRC comments were generated. The comments and SERI resporses were discussed with members of NRC staff by telephone conference on August 10, 1987. SERI's response to the NRC staff comments was provided by letter dated August 21, 1987 (AECM-87/0157).

Additional comments were generated on the above report during the NRC staff review. These additional comments and SERI responses were discussed with members of the NRC staff on September 8, 1987 during a telephone conversation. This letter documents SERI's response to the additional NRC comments. An attachment to this letter provides the NRC comments and SERI's responses.

If additional information is needed to support the NRC staff's review please contact this office.

1. ' NRC Comment Were the inspection results similar for the Refueling Outage One (RF01) Division II Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) Design Review /

Quality Revalidation (DR/QR) inspection when compared with the Division I EDG DR/QR inspection.

SERI Response Attached in Table 1 is a compilation of inspection results of the Division I and II engines. The components listed have been chosen to illustrate similarities between inspection results. It is evident from Table 1 that both Division I and II have very similar inspection results. This is due in part to the fact that the key engine components of both engines are of similar as-manufactured quality. This similarity of materials, design, and fabrication of key components for as-manufactured quality was provided in greater detail by_ letter dated July 5,1984 (AECM-84/0345).

2. 'NRC Comment The Division II EDG DR/QR inspections were reported 79% complete as of RF01. What percentage of DR/QR inspections will be complete after RF02?

SERI Response SERI stated in the June 30, 1987 letter to the NRC (AECM-87/0065) that the GGNS DR/QR baseline inspections are over 79% complete c-the Division II EDG with no significant adverse finding which would effect the design function of the engine. The basis for this number is the inspection documentation which is kept at GGNS. Due to the nature and number of records kept on-site, all of the records were not available at the June 30 letter date; therefore the 79% value represented a conservative estimate at that time. The actual updated completion percentage of Division II DR/QR baseline inspection is presently 87%.

SERI has reported to the NRC, in letter dated June 30, 1987, that several of the remaining DR/QR baseline inspections are to be performed at RF02. These components are the fuel tappet. assembly, air start valves, rocker arm capscrews, exhaust manifold, and the hydraulic valve lifters. Upon completion of the DR/QR inspections associated with these components, GGNS DR/QR baseline inspections will be approximately 89% complete on the Division II EDG.
