I have called attention in my first month's advertising (newspaper, radio, direct mail) principally to the impossibility of evacuat 3n. I will cover other concerns in future advertising. ,

It is my belief that decisions with such potantial public effect must he public decisions. But unless the public and its representatives are informed about the hazards of nuclear power plants, the3 cannot be involved in such important decision making.

I am enclosing a news release and newspaper ad that were included in the July campaign. I hope you will take a few minutes to read this material. It is time to put a stop to construction of nuclear plants in populated areas like Midland. There is, in fact, no location in Michigan that is cut of disaster range of some populated area. It is '

"Tr,o many unanswered questions of safaty ax4:t. And the potantial disaster of a :3rt:os accident is so great, it is Irr?sponsible to sin t to build a nuclear piant in a town the si:2 of Midland or in an ar?a as populated as the Saginaw-Valley," Marshall claims.

Marshall says that the radioactive isotopes produced by a nuclear resctor are the deadliest materials ever produced in mass quantities. He cites plutonium, for example, a by-product of the nuclear fission process, as one of the most toxic substances known to man. Dispersed as fine insoluble particles, one ounce of plutonium represents the potential for'550 million human lung cancer doses.

Plutonium has a life span that requires isolation from the environment for 10,000 human generations.

One of i>arshall's fears is 'that such high-level' radioactive materials will escape into the environment thrcugh a serious plant accident or an accident in transporting. the caterials by truck, rail or plane frcm the plant through population centers.

Decisions of this type cannot be lef t simply to those who stand to make a buck on nuclear power.
