Description of Occurrence:

t During 1607.10,routine fish impingement monitoring 2/22/75, using procedure Ibnitoring Fish Impinged on ANO-1 Intake Screens, 4425 pounds of fish were' collected during a 24-hour sample period beginning at-8:00 a.m. 2/21/75 and ending at 8:00 a.m. 2/22/75.  :

and threadfin shad made up 99.9%-of the total weight of fish.A mixture Other of gizzard

Other '(Specify) i' 1he apparent cause was due to a natural die off of threadfin shad during the winter season. .

. , o

'9. Analysis.of Occurrence: # # '

There has been no apparent adverse environmental impact due to the "

large numbers of shad being impinged at the intake of ANO-1. h' inter-m_ , time mortality of threadfin shad due to low temperatures is not .-

') >

unusual due to their lack of resistance to low water temperatures.

j The ANO-1 intake screens only collect the shad after they become J unable to resist the intake current due to lethargy caused by a decrease in water temperature. '

Due to their fecundity, threadfin shad can withstand a substantial decrease in population each yinter and still mainta'in a population

  • suitable ,for forage by game fish.

The fish that were collected during sampling periods were disposed of

  • through landfill operation. '

.. . 10. Corrective Action:

Long term studies are in progrdss to determine the effects of plant operation on the aquatic ecosystgms of the Dardanelle Rescrvoir. , Data -

from this report and other data ob,t,ained is fed back into these studies -

to determine what. changes might be made to the studios in order to .

- ensure that adequate data is obtained for' evaluating plant impac.t.

Review by Arkansas Power 6 Light Company and its consultants of the results of these studies will determine what corrective action might be taken to reduce plant effects on the reservoir.
