Description of Occurrence:

i During routine fish impingement monitoring 2' 22/75, using procedure

/

1607.10, Monitoring Fish Impinged on ANO-1 Intake Screens, 2710 pounds of fish were collected during an 8-hour sample period.

The projected fish kill for the 24-hour period beginning at at 8:00 a.m. 2/22/75 and ending at 8:00 a.m. 2/23/75 was 8130 pounds based on the 8-hour sample.

A mixture of gizzard and threadfin shad made up 99.9% of the total weight of fish. Other fish made up 0.1% of the total weight.

Threadfin shad made up 981b of the total number of shad.

Intake water temperature taken at 4:00 p.m. 2/22/75 was 47*F, and ambient air temperature was 49'F.

Analysis.of Occurrence:

b

  1. 1 Thero has been no apparent adverse. environmental impact due to the large numbers of shad being impinged at the intake of ANO-1.

}Vinter-

, time mortality of threadfin shad due to low temperatures is not

.I unusual.due to their lack of resistance to low water temperatures.

The ANO-1 intake screens only collect the shad after they become

(

unable to resist the intake current due to lethargy caused by a decrease in water temperature.

Due to their fecundity, threadfin shad can withstand a substantial decrease 19 population each pinter and still mainta'in a population suitabl.e for forage by game fish.

t The fish that were collected during sampling periods were disposed of through landfill operation. The fish that were not collected Werc ground in a trash grinder and returned to Lake Dardanelle.

10. ' Corrective Action:

~;!

Long, term studies are in progress to determine the effects af plant operation on the aquatic ecosyst,, ms of the Dardanelle Reservoir.

Data e

from this report and other data obtained is fed back into these studies to determine what. changes might be made to the studies in erder to ensure that adequate data is obtained for evaluating plar.c impact.

Review by Arkansas Power 6 Light Company and its consultant-; of the results of these studies Will determine what corrective action might be taken to reduce plant effects on the reservoir.
