ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY Arkansas Nuclear One Russellville, Arkansas March 17, 1980 ANO-80-1287 Mr. Karl Seyfrit U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region IV 611 Ryan Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76011

SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One Licensee Event Report 50-313/80-007

Dear Mr. Ser frit:

f This telegram confirms the telephone conversation between !!r. W. D. Johnson j

(NRC Inspector Region IV) and Mr. J. P. O'Hanlon (ANO General Manager) at 0930, March 15, 1980. This is reported to you in accordance with ANO-1 Technical Specification 6.12.3.1.i.

AP&L has been informed by Babcock and Wilcox that it discovered that the Decay Heat (DH) pumps originally installed at ANO-1 contain parts that may not meet specifications. The mating wear rings on each side of the double suction pump (casing ring and impeller ring) were made with material of the same Brinnell hardness rating. The original B & W Equipment Spec required wear ring surfaces to have a hardness difference of at least 50 Brinnell.

The concern with having both mating wear rings of the same hardness value is that one of them then ceases to be a sacrificial material which would take the wear and abuse in the case of the rings coming into contact for a prolonged period of time or foreign particles passing through them. This could possibly result in the mating rings galling and locking up.

This would be more likely to happen if both of the wear rings were defaced, thus decreasing the clearance, and then the pump experienced higher than anticipated temperatures. B&W recommended that ANO-1 replace the wear rings with new wear rings that meet original specifications as soon as practical. The DH pumps at ANO-1 have not 1

indicated any abnormal operating conditions, j

Additional information will be provided in the follow-up report.

Sincerely, 0)

J. P. O'Hanlon 5

General Manager
