VllI$ LjVDr\a - Ir LA.,ý CILCUU I VVJIt I UI /rPii I 1 rttyu e- I Indian Point Energy Center Status Report April 13, 2006 Operational Status - 2R17 Outage Preparations Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% and has been on line 42 days. Indian Point Unit 3 is operating at 100% reactor power and has been on-line for 190 days.
Operations and maintenance crews are preparing for Indian Point Unit 2's upcoming refueling outage scheduled to begin later this month. The outage scope includes replacing about 1/3 of the fuel assemblies and full primary and secondary side inspections of the four steam generators. Entergy will also conduct the 10-year Integrated System Inspection as well as the Integrated Leak Rate Test to measure containment integrity. Routine preventive maintenance and surveillances will be conducted on a number of pumps, valves and associated piping.
Groundwater Investigation Entergy released sample results today from four wells, three along the discharge canal and one near Unit 1, which indicate the presence of Strontium-90 in the water. The test results from MW-49, MW-50 and MW-36, the wells along the discharge canal, show levels of Strontium-90 ranging from 1.00 to 25.5 pCi/L.
Tritium levels range from 26, 800 to 55,200 pCi/L tritium. (See attached map for locations)
These results are consistent with previously reported results from MW-37, which indicated the presence of Sr-90 along the discharge canal.
A series of samples obtained from MW-42, which is located adjacent to the Unit 1 spent fuel pool, show isotopes characteristic of North curtain drain water. (See attached sample results table). A tracer test will be conducted to help determine the source of the contaminants found in these samples. It is possible that the well intercepted a section of the North curtain drains at Unit 1.
Entergy has initiated actions to reduce the concentration of Sr-90 in the Unit 1 spent fuel pool.
Deminieralizers connected to the pool will help reduce the amount of Sr-90 in the pool and thus the amount which is captured by the curtain drains. Entergy is evaluating additional processing in the curtain drains to further reduce the Sr-90 concentration. These actions are being taken in advance of any overall site remediation plan and will enhance the effectiveness of which ever strategy maybe employed. Tracer tests, mentioned above, will help evaluate the effectiveness of the Sr-90 processing.
