Groundwater Investigation Update

" Monitoring Well-67. A packer test is being conduct on this well located on the waterfront near the IP2 turbine building. MW-67 is a deep well which will be equipped with a multi-level sampling system from which 5-6 distinct samples can be obtained

" IP2 Transfer Canal. The canal inspection is entering the non-destructive testing phase. A visual check of the canal's stainless steel liner has shown no "bleed back" of water from behind the liner. A vacuum box test of selected weld and plate areas will be conducted as well as ultrasonic tests to determine if there is evidence of a through wall leak. Those tests are expected to run 8-12 weeks.

" River fish samples. Aquatic samples from the Hudson River have been split between the NRC, New York State and Entergy. These samples will be independently tested. Results are expected late August or early September.

" Monitoring well sample results. About 50 test samples have been received from the various monitoring wells on site. All test results have been within the expected range of results for both tritium and Sr-90.

Samples obtained by the NRC during May and June are comparable to those obtained by Entergy. No off-site well has shown any positive results for radioactivity.

  • Hydrology report. Entergy's hydrology consultant is working on a final report on the testing at Indian Point and plans for long-term monitoring and remediation. The NRC is expected .to hold a public meeting after the report is completed.
  • Storage Container Inspection. Entergy is conducting an inspection of a canister is the IP3 spent fuel pool. The canister has three smaller containers inside that hold highly irradiated components such as sectioned in-core detectors and thimble tubes. The in-core detectors contain minute quantities of U-235 and are classified as special nuclear material. The NRC is providing oversight of the inspection.
