Indian Point Energy Center Status Report May 31, 2007 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 99.4 percent power after re-connecting to the grid this morning at 3:01 a.m. Unit 3 is operating at 100 percent reactor power and has been on line for 29 days.

Entergy Confirms False Positive Tritium Result in Sewage System Entergy reported today that initial indications of tritium activity in the sewer lines at Indian Point were from false positive sample results. In early May, Entergy had reported to local officials and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that effluent samples taken in the spring had shown very low levels of tritium activity. At the time Entergy also reported that they could be false positives and that the company would conduct an investigation and resample. Sewage from Indian Point is pumped to the sewage treatment plant in the village of Buchanan. The village sewage treatment plant was sampled but no tritium activity was found.

Entergy reanalyzed nine samples that had initial results greater than minimum detectable activity. All samples were negative for tritium after the reanalysis.

Samples were also sent to an outside contractor laboratory which confirmed the negative results for tritium.

Don Mayer, director Unit 1 projects reported that the false positives were most likely the result of interference due to some organic materials and chemicals commonly found in sanitary sewers. It is not uncommon in very low level samples to get an occasional false positive result.

Entergy began sampling sewer lines in late 2006 as part of the Nuclear Entergy Institute initiative to monitor for tritium and other radionuclides at nuclear power plants.

"Our contractor laboratory reported to us that they had seen this interference phenomenon in other low activity samples and could correct for it," said Dan Wilson, chemistry superintendent. "It appears that there is a low-energy interference that initially suggests a positive tritium results but disappears after a few days," he said. Tritium with a 12.3 year half-life would not show noticeable decay over that short time period.

John White- May 31 2007.doc Page 2 As part of the overall investigation, Entergy also reviewed engineering diagrams and traced piping systems that connect to the sanitary sewers but were unable to identify a lpotential source for tritium in the sewer lines.

Educational Outreach Entergy Nuclear Northeast provides customized outreach education programs for schools, youth groups, and civic organizations. The topics we cover include Emergency Planning, Understanding Radiation, Nuclear Fuel and a general overview of the operations of Indian Point Energy Center.
