ý EniIergy Indian Point Energy Center Status Report September 13 2007 Operational Status
  • Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100 percent power and has been online for 108 days. Unit 3 is operating at 100 percent reactor power and has been on line for 136 days.

Groundwater Update The ultrasonic testing of the IP2 spent fuel pool transfer canal is continuing. Last week a small pinhole defect was found near a weld.

Entergy metallurgists are reviewing the UT data. Repairs will be made after the UT and vacuum box testing is completed.

  • All monitoring wells are now completed and all wells have been sampled.
  • About 50 sampleresults have been received from monitoring wells on site.

Overall they are consistent with results that had been obtained previously.

Tests results from MW-3 1, which is located in the alley adjacent to the IP2 spent fuel building, showed higher results for tritium and Cs-137 than recent samples but consistent with what has been seen in samples obtained in 2006. Entergy is obtaining additional samples. The results are likely due to seasonal variations in precipitation. These results do not change the calculated dose assessment.

A long term monitoring plan is being developed to ensure that groundwater is monitored for the life of the plant. The long term plan will identify the sampling frequency and action review thresholds for the key wells on site.

The remediation plan for IP I includes draining the west spent fuel pool which contains 160 used fuel assemblies from IPI operations. A demineralizer (pictured at right) is already installed to decrease the concentration of radioisotopes in the pool water. Prior .to removing the fuel from the pool, the water level in the pool will be raised to facilitate fuel moves into the Demineralizerforthe Unit I casks. That action is expected to spentfuelpool water.

increase the leakage from the pool during the fuel loading campaign.

To minimize the amount of contamination present during the times the pools are filled, an additional demineralizer and an ultra-filtration system will also be installed. The design of those systems is underway.

The curtain drain system, which also has demineralizers, will remain in operation after the pool is drained to continue to process water from this foundation drainage system.

The NRC reported that fish sample taken from the Hudson River did not show detectable levels of Sr-90 or gamma emitting isotopes. Spilt samples were obtained from the Hudson River in front of Indian Point, at a control location near Newburg, and further up the river in the Catskill Mountain region. Entergy and New York State DEC samples results have not been obtained yet.

Educational Outreach Entergy Nuclear provides customized outreach education programs for schools, youth groups, and civic organizations. The topics we cover include Emergency Planning, Understanding Radiation, Nuclear Fuel and a general overview of the operations of Indian Point Energy Center.
