SUBJECT:

TRANSPORTATION EVENT Licensee reported a 80,000 lb. reactor coolant pump motor-enroute to Cheswick, PA collapsed one side of the low boy trailer about 12 miles from North Anna on Route 522 in a remote area. The collapse started a small brush fire, but this did not impact the trailor or contents. The motor containing about 254 mci of residual corrosion / fission products (on

-internal parts) remained upright, and the residual motor oil (which contained . very low-levels of contamination) did not leak. The dose rate at contact with the Herculite

{ wrap was 2 mrem /hr and 0.3 mrem /hr at one meter. Two North Anna teams were onsite and L another low boy and lift rig is being sent to return the motor to North Anna. Surveys at the site confirmed no contamination. The resident inspector was dispatched to the site.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Health Department was notified by Region II. The local news media representatives are at the site of the event.

The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the resident inspector at 11:30 a.m. (EDT) on 3/27/89.
