SHUTDOWN EXCEEDING 48 HOURS -
North Anna Unit 1 was taken off line on November 28,1987, at 9:41 p.m. (EST) due to excessive seal leakage on the "B" reactor coolant pump. All leakage was via the normal collection path and no leakage to containment was experienced.
The utility reports that seal leakage had been steadily increasing when the licensee decided to shut down the Unit to make repairs.
A 10 day outage is planned to replace the seal package and inspect the lower radial bearing on the pump motor.
The NRC resident inspector will follow up.
The Comonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
The NRC received initial notification of the company's plans to shut down the reactor at 2:45 p.m. (EST) on November 28.
