SUBJECT:

MEDIA INTEREST IN DISMISSAL OF EMPLCYEES FOR ALLEGED DRUG USE OFF-SITE-Media interest has developed in connection with the dismissal of several members of the security force at the Surry and North Anna nuclear power plants as a result of a licensee investigation into alleged off-site drug use.

The licensee issued a news release on Monday, October 13, which stated that the investigation had resulted in the dismissal or voluntary resignation of 13 security officers or employees. The dismissals included the supervisor of security at Surry.

The company said its investigation originated in early September following allegations received at the North Anna site. Allegations of off-site marijuana use, which allegedly occurred between 1979 and 1986, were substantiated, the company said, but no evidence was found of use while on duty at either power station.

Licensee officials said that company policy calls for termination in cases of on-site or off-site use or distribution of illegal drugs by employees with unescorted access to nuclear power stations.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
