North Anna Unit 1 Notification of Unusual Event Docket No. 50-338 Alert Mineral, Virginia Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

STEAM GEriERATOR TUBE DAMAGE This PN updates PN0-II-82-64, issued on June 9, 1982.

The licensee has reported that photographs of the damaged tube ends below the tube sheet on the hot leg side of steam generators "A" and "C" show that the tube sheet and tube ends have sustained peening damage over 75 percent of the tube sheet area.

The damage in steam generator "C" appears more extensive than that in steam generator "A." A preliminary evaluation indicates the damage is not significant, ard that it will not prevent testing of the steam generators or affect their performance.

Inspection and evaluation are continuing by the licensee and Westinghouse Corporation, the nuclear steam system supplier. Region II is continuing to monitor the licensee's actions and is keeping NRR inforined.

Media interest is not expected. Neither the NRC nor the licensee plans to issue a news release.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
