Louisa County, Virginia

SUBJECT:

ANTICIPATED MEDIA INTEREST IN UNPLANNED RELEASE At 11:10 a.m. on November 2, an unplanned release of radioactive

! gases, mostly Xenon-133 occurred as the result of a spill of three gallons of radioactive liquid. The liquid spill was apparently the i result of a diaphram failure in the gas stripper associated with the boron recovery system. The radioactive release activated the venti-lation system radiation alarms. Sixty-nine workers in the auxiliary building evacuated. One worker was slightly contaminated and was promptly decontaminated by taking a shower. !ai4 1 l pg Licensee estimates the gaseous release to be approximately 1% of [ l

previous media interest in similar events at North Anna. Region II' does not plan to issue a news release. The licensee is considering issuing a news release. The Commonwealth of Virginia has been notified.
