March 21, 1980 Trojan Nuclear Plant Docket 50-344 License NPF-1 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTN:

Mr. A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Operating Reactors U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

Dear Sir:

In response to a verbal question by Mr. Trammell of your staff, we are providing the attached information provided by Bechtel Power Corp.

regarding design criteria for the A-frame support to be used in movement of Plate 8 from the equipment hatch in the Turbine Building to the position where it will be secured to the Plate Support Frames.

We believe that commitment to these criteria should satisfy questions raised by the staff on the adequacy of the A-frame supports for assisting in the transfer of Plate 8 to the main support structure. If additional clarification is required, please let us know.

Sincerely, s

A-Frames Q.

Provide the following information for the A-frames:

a) Member sizes b) Design criteria c) Verify that the dynamic amplication factor of 2 has been considered d) State the seismic qualification of the A-frames.

Answe r:

The A-frames have been designed to fully support Plate 8 in a vertical direction and preclude the plate from falling on its side should the crane hook or rigging f ail before the plate is secured in the Plate Support Frames. Details of the frames, including member sizes, are shown on Figures ll. A and ll.B of Licensee's Tes'timony on Matters Other Than Structural Adequacy of the Modified Complex. The design of the struc-tural elements conforms to the 7th edition of the AISC Specification. A dynamic load amplificaticn factor of 2 has been used to determine the applied forces.

Should an SSE occur while the plate is being supported by the A-frames, the plate would not fall on its side.
