Dear Sir:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 File 0260/0277/0755/L-860.0

, Control Room Design Review Report 2

AECM-80/316 NUREG-0660, Task I.D.1 requires us: to perform a comprehensive review of our control room using NRC human factors design guidelines and evaluation criteria; to modify to correct significant deficiencies; to 7 issue a report describing methods of review, results of review, including bases of findings made, and implementation schedules.

Accordingly, Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L), as agent for Middle South Energy, Inc. contracted with the Essex Corporation to perform an independent third party review of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit I control room. This evaluation was conducted during the period from June 17, 1980 to October 1, 1980 and employed state-of-the-art human engineering evaluation techniques especially tailored for a control room design review using criteria from

.WREG-1580, " Human Engineering Guide to Control Room Evaluation."

The results of that design review have been compiled into the report which is attached for your review. The report prioritizes discrepancies, recommends corrective actions, and presents an implementation schedule.

We would request that we be advised as soon as possible of any comments or recommendations you may have in regard to this report and its conclusions.

Yours truly, G ,/ 9 /
