IEFERE!E. RII:FJ1W; 50-160/78-5 This letter is our response to your report dated December 20, 1978, lugarxilng an inspection of our facility by your staff.

A. Bi-weekly radiosotopic analysis of charcoal cartridge sanple Personnel changes and the nnlfunction of the multichannel r;u: Ira counting equipment during the period June through Octcber, 1978, contributed, in part, to our failure to perfonn the bi-weekly analysis in a titely manner. We believe these problems have both been resolved. In ad:lition, a more rigorous schedule for this analysis han been incorporated beginning Januat"j 2, 1979 We believe we are now in full conpliance.

B. Sh$r Safety blade reactivity worth measuremnts

'Ibe neasurerrent of the shim safety reactivity worths and the calculation of the shutdown trargin are excellent student lab-oratory excercises. In 1978, we deferred these tremsuremnts until the Fall Quarter 30 that they could be i.ncorpoI*ated into Nuclear Engineering course No. 4205 "1he data was in fact taken as noted by your inspector on September 26 and 28,1978. Unfor-tunately, througfi rarngemnt error, a complete arnlysis and interpretation was not finished until Ncvember, 1978.

To prevent recurrence of this problem, we have requested the reactor operation staff to perform this surveillance independant of any anticipated Nuclea.' Engineering Laboratories at its scheduled tim in the sunrrer period. We are now in full compliance.
